The buildings of downtown Oviedo were recognized as a "museum" for purposes of Museum Day in September of 2012, so we made a podcast so you can learn a little more about buildings located there. We have reposted that tour in honor of Seminole County's 100th Birthday! Click here to download it, then head downtown with your phone or iPod and some headphones to learn about our community.

The route is less than 1 mile and the podcast is under 20 minutes (click here for a map). We expect your trek to take about 30 minutes total.

NOTES:

  1. The 2nd stop on the tour (the Old Post Office at 10 W. Broadway Street) was demolished by the Florida Department of Transportation after this podcast was created, so you'll be looking at a grassy field instead of a building.
  2. There is mention of a free prize at one of the stops - this was an incentive specially created for Museum Day, but we have a NEW incentive for those walking this route in honor of Seminole County's Centinnial! Please visit the Townhouse Restaurant for a cool memento of your walk and to get your passport stamped!

The Oviedo Preservation Project (TOPP) is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization dedicated to "Engaging neighbors in history to build a stronger community." We seek to learn more about the history and culture that surrounds us here in Oviedo and to integrate that history into our community fabric as our town grows.

Your Donation Matters! As a group run entirely by unpaid volunteers, we rely on donations from people just like you to continue serving the community. Each year, we host a photo contest to select pictures for a calendar, which we then hand out for FREE. We also organize a FREE cemetery tour each October to literally bring history to life with volunteer actors. In February, we serve FREE breakfast and take people on a guided tour of downtown Oviedo. In April, we host the Annual Citrus & Celery Cook-off at Taste of Oviedo.

TOPP does not seek to further any particular course of action by the government or private citizens. Rather, TOPP seeks to offer a sounding board for ideas about preservation and to encourage city officials to make decisions only after considering the consequences of their actions on historically or culturally significant resources.

Our mission is to assist in helping Oviedoans make well-informed decisions about preserving places, structures, and ideas that are distinctly Oviedo. To facilitate this, TOPP seeks to assist with data collection, consensus-building, and any other effort that may assist council in preserving parts of Oviedo that hold special meaning for not only our own citizens, but citizens of Seminole County, Central Florida, the State of Florida, and the entire country.

This website's goal is to give citizens in Oviedo and the surrounding communities a place to look for interesting tidbits about Oviedo, its history, and its traditions.
